Geithner Addresses Margin Requirements within the Financial Markets
In a speech delivered on September 14, 2006, New York Federal Reserve President, Timothy F. Geithner discussed the importance of margin requirements and collateral in managing counterparty credit risk. Mr. Geithner also spoke on developments in improving processes surrounding CDS and suggested that regulators may soon focus on margin practices. In his remarks Mr. Geithner stated, "The question for policymakers is whether the mix of capital and margins produced by the market is appropriate from the perspective of the financial system as a whole."
Mr. Geither addressed the Group of 14 Dealers' progress to improve the infrastructure that supports the CDS market and stated that the New York Federal Reserve Bank and Group of 14 will discuss efforts to improve the processes in other OTC derivatives markets such as equity derivatives in a meeting next week.
