SEC Seeks to Increase Oversight of SROs
In a meeting on November 9, 2004, the Securities and Exchange Commission voted to put forth a proposed rule and concept release designed to strengthen the governance of Self Regulatory Organizations, increase the transparency of their operations and enhance the Commission's ability to oversee them. Specifically, the proposed rule would require SROs to adopt governance standards, increase their public disclosure of operating structure and governance policies and require that they submit reports to the Commission. The concept release seeks public comment on the overall SRO model and comment on a possible alternative model.
The proposed rule and concept release will soon be made available for public comment.
